It was Roberta Seelinger Trites, who just finished co-editing a book called A Narrative Compass: The Stories that Guide Women's Lives: "Each of us has a narrative compass, a story that has guided our lifework. In this extraordinary collection, women scholars from a variety of disciplines identify and examine the stories that have inspired them, haunted them, and shaped their research."

It sounds like a really interesting book, and the excerpt she read was great!

Maybe there are some good novels that you can link to your social science classes/topics. I bet there are - after all, literature is based on "society." Good luck!

Ooh ooh! I would love to know who the children's lit scholar was. I specialized in children's literature when I did my master's and got recruited to do my PhD at Illinois State with some heavy hitters in children's lit. Alas, I was burned out and passed it up, but it was a wonderful time before the burn out!

You know, I thought I would love this book, but I couldn't get into it. I might have to give it another go. I have a 1940s era British book to give away on my blog if you are interested.

That's what's keeping me from watching it. There are so many magical elements that work beautifully in the book, but I can't even imagine them being realized on the big screen!

And thanks for stopping by!

I love this book!

I've seen the movie. It's sort of... eh. While not terrible, it didn't quite capture the magic of the book for me.

I love Marginalia! I recently added a poetry exempted clause to my book buying ban in an attempt to perhaps read more of it :P I always hesitate to pick it up, but when I do I tend to enjoy it. I think I'm going to start with Collins.

Like Amy said, I think that you just have to let some things go and participate in what you find the most interesting. It does get really crazy!
